My preceptor today is known for his terrible jokes. As you go in for your surgery he likes to add "don't worry, we'll get that sex change operation done in no time!" and once your benzos have set in likes to ask patients "Do i look like Brad Pitt, yet?" His jokes are predictable, and are met with groans from many of the staff. What i love about this man is his desire to teach. It might be a means to brag....for instance, he likes to ask everyone what distinguishes an ester from an alkane because his organic chemistry is spot on. However he challenges your anesthetic plan, makes suggestions, lets you take charge but still asks why because he wants you to think about your own conceptions of medication actions.
Today i got to place my first King tube (rock on Combi-tube hybrid!), and treated a challenging patient with my preceptor's guidance. It was a really challenging and rewarding day that was made more interesting and pleasant from a human being who cares about his staff and his students, making sure that lunch breaks are had, you know if there's a free lunch available somewhere, that you are getting the experiences you need, and making sure all the CRNA's are getting their breaks and are feeling supported (i fielded only about 20 phone calls for him today). Yet, despite "not being in the mood for teaching" on a snow day where half the staff at the hospital called out (one claimed they didn't own a shovel!) he taught me quite a bit in a short day. Thank you very much Bob Scogna. You are a rockstar preceptor.
Oh, and a big thank you for the weather. Snow is my favorite, even when i drive. While i know that it can shut down the entire city, be treacherous, irritating, heavy work and a slog, walking to clinical with more pedestrians than i've ever seen in the pure white trenches of early morning made my day.
